This project is two series combined. When working on them, I realized that they complemented each other and felt that they should be put together. Both images are captured in what would be considered as alternative processes, the flowers are from a scanner where the sunrises and sunsets are long exposures with camera movement.
The flowers are scanned in perfect detail, each petal and leaf is revealed with their uniqueness and imperfections, they are form, color and texture. Each scan brings out the distinctive beauty of the flower along with its fragility that makes each bloom unlike any other.
The sunrises and sunsets are just as unique, this is my favorite time of day, the colors are never the same and always amaze. Photographing them with a long exposure and camera movement brings a painterly quality to the image. They create a soft and dreamy image as if waking from a dream.
Bringing these two series together shows the colors of Mother Nature and how they play off of each other. They are striking and subtle, detailed and diffused, but they have a harmony the resonates between them.
Pieces of Florida
When I go out to photograph, I don't go with a preconceived idea of what to shoot. I leave that up to nature, letting her share what she shows me. With a flash of color, a unique form or beautiful composition these are the clues nature leaves for me to find. This is how my series, Pieces of Florida, has come together. Growing up in Florida, I took for granted the wild and wonderful areas that are preserved throughout the state, beyond the beaches and amusement parks are the swamps and prairies that make up the "Real Florida". It is here that I have rediscovered my Florida. My intimate abstracts are small building blocks or puzzle pieces that make up the larger environments that seem to be chaotic or bare, but if you look closer you can find hidden gems. I invite you on my walk through the real Florida on a treasure hunt in nature.
My favorite times of the day are sunrise and sunset, these are the times when the colors of the sky become vivid and breathtaking, no other time of day will give you such colors. This project is all about sunrises and using the camera to paint an image. The light inspires me to create something soft and dreamy, as if you are just waking up to the morning light. The mornings that I have photographed have a range of atmospheric conditions: clear skies, cloudy, stormy and gloomy. All of these conditions produce different colors and by increasing them in post-production enhances what Mother Nature has provided.
Each one is unique, just as each sunrise, the hues of blues, purples, lavenders, golds and reds become the abstract patterns of these images. These painterly images are how I see the sunrise each morning, with a new appreciation for the palette of the sky.
Scanned Beauty: Flowers
This is built around the uniqueness of flowers; their colors, shapes and textures. Creating the compositions is like painting on a canvas, I select the color combinations and how the flowers will be arranged. They are rendered in high detail and the structure of shape and line can be closely studied. This is achieved by using a scanner as a camera and by constructing the image on the planchette. Finding and showcasing the distinctive beauty brings out the fragility and strength from each flower, it also shows the slight imperfections that make the bloom unlike any other. It is fascinating to see the compositions in an artistic way while they are captured in scientific detail.
